Philanthropy and the Humboldt Broncos

The Humboldt Broncos: a team that everyone across the nation knows about for the wrong reason. Well, at least that’s how it started. But after tragedy struck, the country quickly came together to shine some light on the heartbreak (and raise a whopping $15.1M and counting). The Humboldt Broncos are now known for all of the right reasons: pride, unity, bravery, and hope.

In addition to the $15.1M was an outpouring of encouraging posts that flooded people’s social media feeds. Moments of silence were held at hockey games, sticks were placed outside front doors, and Humboldt’s green and gold colours were worn proudly. The support has been astonishing, perhaps because everyone can relate to travelling on a team bus, or maybe the relation comes from having a connection to your community’s local sports team.

Why don’t we react this way for all tragedies and disasters? Better yet, why don’t we act this way on a daily basis for the many causes and charities that exist? Before I worked in philanthropy, I thought of donating as a nice gesture. I understand now that it’s much more than that. It’s a responsibility. The only people who can make the world a better place are the ones living in it, so it’s up to us to do just that.

I am not trying to diminish the incredible response to the Humboldt tragedy. I am challenging us to do better. To show this kind of support day in and day out. Even if your time and income is limited, it can be done. Donate $5 month instead of buying that Starbucks latte, or volunteer at your community’s next event. This is the real meaning behind being #HumboldtStrong.
