Time Flies When You Love What You Do

Alas, the time has come. A massive weight has been released off my shoulders with the launch of my first blog. With so much time dedicated to building a website and creating a space to hone through time, I am both excited and nervous. So here it is: Eight Days A Week. But what is Eight Days A Week? What does it mean?

As a new grad, I read job descriptions about as regularly as I eat. Despite having a position I enjoy, I like to know what skills other organizations are looking for, so I can continue to build my resume. I go through job descriptions for jobs within the sports industry, and a qualification I can bet my money on seeing every time goes something like this: Must have a flexible schedule and be willing to work evenings, weekends and holidays as required. Regardless of the role, each time I get to that part in the qualification I think, “Heck yes, at least I meet one of the qualifications!”

I’ve learned very quickly in my career within the sports industry, that regular hours simply do not exist. Regular workdays certainly do not exist either. You work Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm until it’s a game day, and then you can add an extra five hours onto that. Or maybe you work your usual Monday to Friday until it’s event time, and as the event approaches your days slowly get longer and longer. When the event is on you may finish at 11:00pm and start the next day at 3:00am. Believe me, as I speak from experience and the fondest of memories. Of course weekends and holidays are not only fair game, but expected. The hours are sometimes crazy and in all honesty, I wouldn’t want it any other way.

Marc Anthony famously said, “If you do what you love, you’ll never work a day in your life.”

And I famously say, “Thank you, Marc Anthony.”

Being passionate about what you do will ultimately make the unpredictable and prolonged hours fly by, quite like the way they have for me. I know that accomplishing my goals will take quality time and effort, but I will approach it with gusto, and I hope you will too. If you wake up in the morning ambitious and hungry, the long hours that it will require from you won’t seem so long. Do what you love. Work hard. And achieve it all, because time really does fly when you love what you do.

Wow, I love it. How inspiring. Something will come and they will be lucky to have a positive, energetic employee, who loves what she does!! Good work on the blog.
